I saw Dr.Uni on Chinese social media called Redbook, and they helped me a lot when I was at university in the UK. According to their advice, the first step I took was utilising the university's academic support services, which proved to be a game changer for me. I got in touch with the academic advisor from Dr.Uni who helped me plan my courses effectively, ensuring that my workload was manageable while allowing me to pursue my interests. This support allowed me to refine my research skills and build the confidence I needed to succeed in a competitive academic field. At the same time, I took part in some offline events from Dr.Uni, I was able to access emotional and mental health support, which helped me manage the challenges of being away from home and dealing with the pressures of university life.

I felt like my world was falling apart at that moment. It started when I received a phone call that my dad had suffered a sudden heart attack and was now on the brink of death. However, there was one significant problem: I had an in-person exam scheduled for two days later that I couldn’t miss. The fear and anxiety I felt were overwhelming; I was torn between being with my family and fulfilling my academic responsibilities. In my desperation, I remembered my friend mentioned Dr.Uni before, so I reached out to Dr.Uni for guidance. The team’s response was immediate, supportive, and reassuring. With the help of Dr.Uni, I was in touch with my school’s academic advisor the next day who permitted me to take the exam online instead of in person. Dr.Uni's prompt and empathetic assistance turned a potential disaster into a manageable situation, allowing me to be present for my family without sacrificing my education. I can’t express enough gratitude for their help and would recommend their services to any student facing unexpected challenges.

OUR PEOPLE
The Voice of Mentors

AI (Artificial Intelligence) has become a powerful tool in academic writing, assisting with grammar, structure, and brainstorming. However, misuse of AI can lead to academic misconduct, such as submitting AI-generated content as original work, fabricating data, or failing to cite AI-assisted contributions properly. These actions breach the principles of academic integrity, which emphasize honesty, fairness, and responsibility in all scholarly activities. To uphold these values, students should ensure their work remains original and align AI usage with their institution’s policies. Choosing reliable tools, critically reviewing AI-generated output, and using AI for guidance—not as a shortcut—can enhance writing while preserving creativity and critical thinking.

Maintaining a balanced approach to academic responsibilities and leisure activities during university is critical for mental well-being and long-term success. Drawing from extensive experience, I recommend the implementation of a well-structured yet adaptable schedule. A highly effective strategy is task prioritisation through the Pomodoro Technique, optimising concentration and reducing the risk of burnout. Equally important is the deliberate incorporation of leisure time. Participation in extracurricular activities, such as intramural sports or student organisations, not only provides a productive outlet for relaxation but also fosters valuable social networks that can further support academic success. Establishing clear boundaries—allocating designated time for academic work and personal activities—is essential to mitigate the risk of stress and promote a harmonious balance. Ultimately, achieving balance is less about striving for perfection and more about cultivating a sustainable, personalised rhythm that supports academic excellence and personal fulfilment.

It's crucial to ensure that Chinese students are fully informed about their rights within the university system. Many international students may be unfamiliar with UK educational norms, so a key part of mentoring is helping them understand the specific rights they have. For example, they should be aware of their right to access academic support, such as tutoring or disability services. I often advise students to familiarise themselves with university policies on academic integrity, attendance, and grading, ensuring they know their right to appeal decisions or raise concerns about unfair treatment. Beyond academic rights, many students may not understand the UK’s protections against discrimination or harassment. I encourage them to report any mistreatment or bias to the university's support services, which are legally bound to investigate such claims. Furthermore, clarifying their financial rights, such as access to scholarships or hardship funds, can help alleviate stress. By addressing these areas with clear and accessible guidance, we can empower Chinese students to confidently advocate for themselves, ensuring they have a fulfilling and supported university experience in the UK.
